Panel: Why AI Still Doesn’t Work (and What It Will Take to Fix It)
Prof. Dr. Feiyu Xu is an internationally recognized AI expert whose career spans leading roles in both academic research and global technology industry. She is University Professor of Industry AI at the German University of Digital Science, where her research focuses on applying cutting-edge AI technologies to drive the intelligent transformation of modern industries. In addition to her academic work, she serves on several supervisory and advisory boards. She is a member of the supervisory boards of ZF Group, Siemens Energy Group and FAZ GmbH, and a Non-Executive Director on the boards of Airbus SE, ChainIQ Group and Zühlke Group. She also serves on the advisory boards of Global Neighbours and GCORE, supporting dialogue and collaboration between Europe, Asia and the global technology ecosystem. From 2020 to 2023, she was Senior Vice President and Global Head of Artificial Intelligence at SAP, where she defined and implemented the company’s global AI strategy and integrated AI across products, operations and the broader SAP ecosystem. Before joining SAP, she served as Vice President at Lenovo Group and Head of the AI Lab at Lenovo Research, where she designed Lenovo’s global AI technology strategy and led the development of AI solutions across devices, data centers and intelligent systems. Earlier in her career, Dr. Xu was Principal Researcher at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Berlin, where she led the Text Analytics research group and co-founded the DFKI spin-off Yocoy Technologies. Her scientific work has been widely recognized, including a Google Focused Research Award and the distinction of DFKI Research Fellow. She has published more than one hundred research papers in leading AI and natural language processing conferences and journals. Dr. Xu studied computational linguistics at Saarland University, earned her PhD in applied natural language processing, and later completed her habilitation in big-data text analytics. Across her research and executive career, she has built deep expertise in AI platforms, conversational AI, knowledge graphs, information extraction and data-driven business intelligence, while gaining extensive experience across the full innovation cycle from research to commercialization.
